WELCOME TO MY BLOG!
I'm Nancy Hughes and I am so glad you found me. Welcome to my blog. You can meet me in person at Northstar Pilates. In college as a dance major is when I discovered the miracle of Pilates. My dance teachers would give me directions or cues that I didn't understand ("engage your hamstring" or "round your spine"). Pilates gave me body awareness. It taught me how to really understand my body and how it moves. All of the mystery dance cues suddenly made sense.
Back and foot pain were routine issues for me from the time I was fifteen years old. Pilates led to increased flexibility, allowed me to access positions previously unreachable and I could stretch parts of my body I could never stretch before. I also gained 3/4" of height after correcting my scoliosis through Pilates. All of this is why I pursued Pilates as part of my career path.
What I love is the transformative nature of Pilates and that I am able to help people reach their goals. An hour-long personal training session leaves you feeling centered, focused and empowered. My personalized attention to your every movement works to ensure I help you find and develop your core, increase flexibility, gain strength, improve balance, push your limits and feel an overall mind-body equality. You can apply Pilates principles to every activity you perform from sitting on your sofa to running household errands to weight lifting. I especially enjoy how excited people are when they begin to notice changes in their bodies. Pilates is not only for the person who loves to exercise but it is perfect for the person who hate to exercise; my clients who hate to exercise say that they love Pilates! Pilates can accommodate every level of mover whether you are a very active person or typically a couch potato. The Pilates studio should be a place people feel comfortable going on good or bad days. Our group classes are limited to six participants at a time. These small class sizes afford a connection with others while still offering personalized direction. Think of me as a life coach for your body!
Pilates was a natural extension of what I was doing with dance. Pilates and dance are now entwined in my life and I love how both of those influence each other. I am always excited about sharing this.
My certification was completed in 2000 at Motion Studies. I am also certified in Pilates through Pilates Method Alliance. On my way to Motion Studies I participated in Certification Intensives at the Physical Conditioning Center in Houston, Texas with Elizabeth Jones-Boswell. I have taught across the country including Texas (Texas Woman's University), Oregon (workshops), Colorado (Colorado College), and Massachusetts (The Pilates Studio of Western Massachusetts). I have been in Western New York for four years. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Texas Woman's University.
I am a champion for dance in Buffalo! When I am not teaching Pilates at Northstar Pilates, I teach dance, guest teach at studios, schools and universities, choreograph and produce dance productions, dance in productions, direct and perform in a collaborative improvisation dance company and curate shows.
